Untangled clothes hangers, when the washer doesn't eat the socks, finding a handicapped parking space, taking risks and playing it safe, and lighting a candle "just because".
When I had my brain stem stroke in '96 I was hanging out in the hospital and had been there for about a week. At 4:00 in the morning the nurses and aids felt that it was time to throw on the lights and change the sheets. A small nurse came to my bedside and holding my sheets began to talk. At length. She told me about her bad marriage, illnesses, financial problems, and feeling all alone in the world. " But after seeing the miracle of you (my recovery) I now can believe in Jesus again." Wow! Humbling! And all that I needed to do was to have a stroke and lie there.
Changing over the laundry from the washer to the dryer and not dropping anything, napping during a thunderstorm, watching the sunrise on overcast days, "Blue Dog" commissioned painting, our "pet" baby box turtle "Sherman" living in our backyard, confused Mallard ducks hanging out in our neighborhood, and sunflowers.
When one gets a cold your immune system of solders w/ all of their aggressive weapons take over and attack it. Cold gone. Game over. But with Lupus the army asks "what else can we do?" So they attack the nerves, the lungs, the kidneys, the eyes... all parts of the body are open for attack. So we put out the fires as they come and pray for a cure.
The sound of ice cubes crashing in the freezer, high fives, finding my favorite pen, turning the pillow over to the cooler side, looking for my favorite shirt in my closet and finding it, fixing a good dinner for two, my redone office/art studio and painting cows... don't you just love them?
Not being ruled by a chocolate chip cookie, Glenn's awesome omelets, "Power Thoughts" by Joyce Meyer, windowsills, using the house telephone (hey! They still work!), Southern living Magazine, and a fresh gigantic loaf of Panera's three cheese bread.
We lived in the Mojave desert for three years. It rarely rained. When it did, the air stunk from all of the thick layers of old "dust". The dry creek beds would gush with torrents of water leaving the desert cleansed and ready to grow summer blooms. It is the same thing with indulging in a good cry. I feel better now.
Every day being a new beginning, waking up to birds singing "anything you can do I can be better", "Silk" milk w/ chocolate protein powder, filling my bucket so that I can fill others buckets, new book "How Full Is Your Bucket?" having a pity party w/ my sister Bonnie and feeling so much better... poor Bonnie!, being able to roll over in bed again and not having to use the hospital bed, and picking out something to wear. Celebrate the day!
Being taken to Publix to go inside and shop/choose for myself.... Disney World!, meeting good friends for lunch, Re-doing my art studio to also be my office (small space, big challenge), new art shows, new books "Creative Girl, The ultimate guide for turning talent and creativity into a real career" and "Tranquilista, mastering the art of enlightened work and mindful play" and wearing the color orange. Celebrate the day!
The privilege and responsibility to improve my own attitude, lo-fat chai lattes, palmettos waking up with the sunrise, good books to read, "being right is highly over rated", an empty dishwasher, and meeting friends for lunch,
I have Lupus. I have flares. Right now I am in one. Bummer. Yesterday between appointments at the Mayo Clinic I was sitting in my power chair by one of the many beautiful gardens and I had a memory. Two years ago I was sitting by the same pond w/ egrets, blue heron's, turtles, flowers... I was in my same power chair strapped in so that I wouldn't fall out. It took me three small naps along the way to get out to the pond (yes in public). I remember sitting there thanking God that I was now longer a long time resident in the hospital and rehab center in a sling. I thought that "this is it' and I would not be able to sit unaided and I was so very thankful to come such a long way and to be "independent". Now I am singing and performing again. I am still in a power chair but God has shown me how to live. I have Lupus but it doesn't have me. Celebrate the day!
The tops of pine trees swaying in the wind, greeting the morning on the back lanai, elephant ears returning after a long winters nap, angel hair pasta, opening my email in the morning, and having a life with too many things to do... I'm in!
My orchid plant blooming for the third year in a row, Panda Express for lunch and having the self control to eat only 1/2 of it, working on new music, brainstorming on how to help charities with the resources that I currently have, sun dappled shadows across the driveway in the late afternoon, and so many generous artists waiting to encourage me and others on Facebook.
Clean sheets, a large pot of homemade soup, lighting a sugar cookie candle, ginger snaps w/ lemon icing, sunflowers on my patio, our new HUGE potted tomato bush, taking a shower un aided in my shower w/ chair in the late afternoon, doodling pen and ink note cards and contemporary Christian music on XM.
Sometimes not knowing what the other person is thinking, the kindness of "strangers", thinking like a child and 'going out to play', going to barnesandnoble.com, picking out 23 best sellers, then going to my library's website and putting holds on them for free, And learning how to put a filter on my email going from 200 emails a day to around 40. Now don't I feel special?!
Routines, doing today what will matter tomorrow, new friends on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and nancyasbellblogspot, comfortable shoes and soft cotton clothes, taking a break from work yesterday w/ Hubby to go to Mango Mango's for lunch, our new huge potted tomato plant and finding an itty bitty baby box turtle... so cute!
